TOPIC: Making a 2D wrap for a 3d object

Making a 2D wrap for a 3d object 28 Oct 2013 14:01 #1086

Hi everyone.
I am looking for some advice on a technique which I don't know the name of! I want to be able to create a flat version of a 3d object. As an example we can use an object like a pen :

I would want to make an outline of the pen creating a skin on the top of the pen that you could peel off entirely. Another way of looking at what I want to do - is to be able to print a piece of paper which could be cut out, and be stuck around the outside of the pen, including cap and pocket clip entirely refacing the pen itself, like the sticker which might be applied around the outside of the pen.
I need to be able to reverse engineer this flat wrap template for an object similar to the pen pictured above - but I do not know the correct technique or how to do this! I would really value some support from this community and excitedly await your suggestions!

There should be some method by which the skin of the pen can be copied. I have to explore the options. Its an interesting question.
